Gum Disease Q & A

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, starts when plaque builds up on the teeth. While plaque is normal, it’s important to remove it by brushing, flossing, and receiving regular dental cleanings. If left unchecked, plaque buildup creates toxins that damage the gums and separate them from the teeth.

Generally, gum disease doesn’t cause much pain. As a result, it’s often hard to identify it, even in your own mouth. Some of the warning signs of periodontal disease include:

  • Tender, swollen, or red gums
  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Space or pus between the teeth and gums
  • A bad taste in your mouth or ongoing bad breath
  • Changes in your bite

What are the different types of gum disease?

Not all gum disease is the same. As it escalates, it transforms from gingivitis to periodontitis.

Gingivitis

In its earliest stages, gum disease causes reddened, swollen, and tender gums that usually bleed easily. The good news is that gingivitis is very treatable and at-home mouth care is often enough to cure it.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, it evolves into periodontitis. Periodontitis poses a serious threat to both your gums and the bone that supports your teeth. Consequently, it can lead to tooth loosening and loss.

What is the treatment for gum disease?

Edward H. Chappelle Jr., DDS, will tailor your gum disease treatment to your specific case. For example, mild gingivitis might only require increased brushing and flossing at home. For more advanced cases of periodontal disease, he can offer nonsurgical treatments.

The first steps will be to use at-home periodontal trays to restore cleanliness and health to your mouth. Dr. Chappelle also offers scaling and root planing. During this deep cleaning periodontal treatment, he will scale the tooth or remove all plaque and tartar from below your gum line. Then, he will plane the root or smooth it. Healthy gum will begin to regrow and will more easily attach to the newly smoothed surface of the root.

If needed, Dr. Chappelle can also use laser periodontal therapy to access and remove inflamed gum tissue, making way for healthy gum to grow.

Whether you are seeking treatment for gum disease or simply want to prevent this common cause of tooth loss, Edward H. Chappelle Jr., DDS, can help. Call or request your appointment online today.
